1E launches Web WakeUp power management tool

Half of UK employees do not power down their PCs at the end of a working day

Green software and services provider 1E has launched Web WakeUp, a software tool that lets users manage their PCs via the web.

The company said that Web WakeUp will appeal to users who want to access or boot up a PC from wherever they are, using a device like the Apple iPhone.

1E claimed that this will save time waiting for the PC to boot up, and incentivise workers to power down their PCs when not in use.

The company quoted a survey, supported by the Alliance to Save Energy, which found that around half of workers in the UK do not power down their PCs at the end of a working day because 'it takes too long', 'they haven't been told to' or because their IT department 'doesn't want them to'. 1E said that Web WakeUp can put an end to this.

"Two of the biggest barriers to PC power management are the concern that user productivity may be affected, and a 'just in case' mentality which prevents users from shutting down their PCs at the end of a working day," said Sumir Karayi, chief executive at 1E.

"PCs that are not powered down block the potential cost and energy savings that organisations can make from power management.

"He added that Web WakeUp "puts the individual user in the driving seat" by giving them more control of PC availability and making power management functionality more accessible.

1E recommends that Web WakeUp is used in conjunction with its NightWatchman power management system, which it claims can lead to average savings of £23 per PC per year.
