IBM has launched a hosted version of its Lotus Notes messaging software, allowing companies with 1,000 to 10,000 employees to use the messaging platform without the need to purchase and install software.
The company said that the Lotus Notes Hosted Messaging service will cost under $10 (£6.13) per user per month.
The service is IBM's effort to remodel the Lotus Notes communication suite as a web-based service. Previous moves have included the launch of email clients for the iPhone based on the Domino webmail system.
Microsoft is undertaking a similar transformation with its Exchange system, while traditional software-as-a-service vendors such as Google and Salesforce are moving into the enterprise communications arena.
"Software delivery models such as cloud computing, software-as-a-service and hosting are evolving because companies want flexibility," said IBM messaging and collaboration vice president Kevin Cavanaugh.
"There is high demand for this approach because of the way it is delivered, and its competitive pricing."

It's inevitable of course, whether it's Notes, Office Live or Google apps, but the real issue is how to migrate from one service to another. There was a very interesting article a while ago about Washington DC migrating to Google apps, the CIO Vivek Kundra has give the freedom of choice to staff - bad idea - see http://iconax.wordpress.com/ In the enterprise space all of these systems are integrated to business applications, it will take a lot of time and thought before migrations can take place
