Taiwanese netbook maker Acer will launch its own brand of smartphones at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona next week, and analysts believe that the firm plans to introduce numerous different handsets.
Several online stores in Taiwan and the UK have already started taking pre-orders for an Acer handset strikingly similar to the Glofiish DX900, released in mid-2008 by Taiwanese firm E-Ten Information Systems, which Acer acquired in the third quarter of last year.
The DX900 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 and boasts dual SIM cards, GSM/Edge and 3.5G/HSDPA. It also features a 2.8in VGA touch-screen and 3-megapixel camera.
Acer said that it will release more details at the event in Barcelona next week, but it is assumed that the new device will not differ significantly from the DX900 although it could run on a newer version of Windows Mobile, possibly version 6.5.
Having dual SIM card slots means the phone will be able to connect to two networks at the same time, useful in cases where a user wants to surf the internet while making a call.
The phone, which will reportedly also come with Wi-Fi and GPS, is currently priced at around $570 (£385) as a pre-order at online stores.
Do you agree?
no...wrong
Dual sim is useful for when you want to surf the net and make a call at the same time... or so you say. That is so wrong! On a wm device - as on all current s60 smartphones etc - you do NOT need 2 sims for that!!!
2 sims are useful for a number of things; your example is not one of them! You cannot use the 2 sims at the same time - well, that'd be problem number one!
The idea that it could be useful for, uh, a work and a private account too far-fetched? Or to make the best of the various tariff offers? Too extreme? oh, ok - go with the unnecessary and impossible then ;)

Well I love Acer products but a 3 megapixal cammra :-(
Well I'm an ex Md of a very large Security company, I have a BA in internet security & web Design.
Now I'm CEO Of the www.worldwideepilepsytrust.org. This new green interactive site go's live 24/7 on the 1st of March 2009. All are Computers R Acer & they have real cool security like the biult in fingrprint reader.
But a 3mega pixall cammra is not up to the mark, I think I'll stick with the Nokia N96. Which as yu may know comes with full global gprs maps, free software downloads & uploads via there Ovi network
