The Ministry of Defence is developing two e-learning solutions, covering core first aid and map reading skills, for its Ground Training Equipment (GTE) division.
According to the MoD, appropriate elements of the training will be converted into scenario-based e-learning, with more practical elements continuing to be taught in the classroom.
GTE is working closely with electronic and blended learning company Epic Group to build the system, which will eventually be used more widely throughout the MoD.
Squadron Leader David Thomas, the officer responsible for e-learning at the GTE, said in a statement: "The RAF regiment personnel involved in this project are very much part of Epic's development team and we are extremely confident that this project will set the standard for future courseware conversions."
Bob Hampson, business development director at Epic Group, added: "This system is for deployment within the RAF regiment, and there is a huge integrated team in the MoD working on [extending schemes like this across the MoD].
"When the MoD does something like this it has to make sure that it doesn't have 15 similar first aid systems."
The e-learning initiative came out of a defence training review two years ago which sought to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, explained Hampson.
Steve Rayson, sales and marketing director at Epic Group, said in a statement: "Epic has been refining the use of scenario-based solutions combined with optimum blends of learning methods for a very long time.
"We therefore regard this assignment very much as a pathfinder project that will set new standards, change the traditional view of e-learning and be adopted for future MoD assignments."
