Apple has shed further light on the contents of its upcoming iPhone software update. The company will first release the iPhone 3.0 package as a beta version for developers, and is hoping to have the update available for consumers this summer.
Users will be given a number of new features, most notably support for multimedia messaging and the ability to cut and paste text, the lack of which has been a common gripe with iPhone owners.
IPhone users will be able to download the latest version for free, while iPod touch customers will have to lay out $9.95 (£7.15) for the software update. Developers will also be given access to a number of new APIs, including the ability to play a user's iPod library within an application, and to use push notifications to alert users.
"The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike," said Apple worldwide product marketing senior vice president Philip Schiller. "It will keep us years ahead of the competition."
Other planned updates include support for stereo Bluetooth devices, voice memo recording and support for Apple's Spotlight search tool.
Do you agree?
Voice Dial??
How about a native voice dialing feature? The apps you can get in the app store are useless because you must first open the app and in some cases press a button to say the contact name you want to dial. That's even more unsafe to do in the car than manually dialing a contact

Years Ahead?????
If this will bring us years ahead of the competition then why should such a simple feature as the ability to record video not be on there as pretty much all their competition have this much needed facility

Years Behind more like
No ability to search for email (no ability to search for any data on phone)!
No support for Flash!
Have to turn off data roaming or get hit with large bills!
Cannot set a custom ringtone without resorting to third party software, iToner!
No ability to set schedule for push email!

Oh Please
I am an iPhone enthusiast but there are still some big gaps in the software and even hardware. Yes there are some cool apps but like everyone else said, no video conferencing, no flash and a variety of other things. Seriously flash is the majority of websites now and we cant expect every website to create the iphone.example.com version.
Does it let you customize your phone more than any other? Mostly. Any app you want, Yes. Any background you want, No. Very frustrating.
I still own and prefer the original iPhone...helps that I live in a none 3g area. The next generation has to have a massive upgrade(i.e. video conferencing, upgraded processor and megapixels out the ying yang...I mean why not?)
FYI...you can make ringtones in iTunes by selecting the time section(making sure its :28 seconds or less) and converting it to aac. From there drag it and drop it into some other folder other than the original file and delete it out of itunes. Then change the extension to end in .__r instead of .__a. then drop it back into itunes and then sync. Free ringtone.

They are on drugs
How could they say, years ahead?????
Apple has the most closed platform, that being Hardware and the OS software. I switched from Ericsson and used the iPhone for 6 months and I had all the problems that where mentioned by the other comments. As an engineer, I can tell you that the iPhone is the worst phone out there. Apple is incredible at brainwashing people with their marketing style. I have used apple's OS, Laptops, Desktops and they are great, but not the phone. Even if they come up with a more updated version, it will be no match for Ericsson?s iDou Phone. I tested the iDou in person and I was blown away. Ericson has really brought the Big Guns out. iphone will be no match for it.
