Intel and Nokia have joined forces to build systems using 802.16e, or WiMax, that will offer broadband download speeds on a mobile handset or laptop.
The pair will be looking to build WiMax into Nokia's network infrastructure business, and will be carrying out joint marketing campaigns.
"Nokia's end-to-end multi-radio strategy covers many wireless technologies optimised for uses from local connectivity and fast data transport, to broadcasting technologies and full mobility of voice and data," said Tero Ojanperä, chief strategy officer at Nokia.
"WiMax will be an important technology and will create new opportunities for the consumer and enterprise markets."
Significantly, Intel and Nokia will only be developing systems based on 802.16e, which is not yet an accredited standard. Some manufacturers have been concentrating on the existing 802.16d standard that has been ratified.
Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager at Intel's Mobility Group, acknowledged that it is early days, but said that the new deal would help bring the technology to the mass market.
