Remote access developer LogMeIn has unveiled an alpha version of its Ignition software for use on the BlackBerry Storm.
The tool will allow owners of the touch-screen smartphone to access and control an internet-connected Windows or Mac computer as if they were sitting in front of it.
LogMeIn announced support for BlackBerry devices in September 2008 for its Rescue+Mobile product, which allows helpdesk staff to reach into and control phone handsets. A version of Ignition for the iPhone was released in December last year.
"BlackBerry smartphone users are accustomed to being productive while on the go, and LogMeIn extends users' mobility by making their office and home computers fully accessible from their smartphone," said Kevin Farrell, vice president and general manager of digital living at LogMeIn.
"Ignition will be optimised for use with the BlackBerry Storm, and will make it easy for anyone to carry the power of their computer with them virtually anywhere, without the weight."
Users will be able to access all the files and programs on a PC running LogMeIn Pro, LogMeIn IT Reach or LogMeIn Free. There is also support for Mac OS X systems running LogMeIn Free.
The application uses the Storm's touch screen to allow users to zoom, scroll and select items on the remote desktop, and there is a full on-screen keyboard available for text entry.
Connectivity is achieved using 256-bit SSL encryption to help ensure that data traffic is protected.
LogMeIn said that Ignition will also allow users to create a list of available connected computers in their LogMeIn account, and will show their online/offline status as well as store access passwords making it easier to remotely access the computer.
LogMeIn Ignition for the BlackBerry Storm Smartphone is currently in alpha and users are invited to sign up to be notified when the beta version becomes available.
Do you agree?
