Dell has disclosed full details of its new workstations based on Intel's Nehalem chips, claiming that the systems offer performance gains of up to 90 per cent over existing models.
Announced along with Dell's 11G PowerEdge servers last week, the new Precision workstations consist of the T7500, T5500 and T3500 tower-format systems, all of which are available immediately.
The most powerful model is the T7500, which can be fitted with dual quad-core Xeon 5500 processors running at up to 3.2GHz, and up to 192GB of 1066Mhz or 1333MHz DDR3 memory. Prices start at £1,337.
The mid-range T5500 supports up to 72GB memory in a more compact chassis, priced from £1,159, while the T3500 supports up to 24GB memory but has only a single processor socket and is priced from £969.
All models can be fitted with a choice of ATI FirePro, Nvidia NVS and Quadro FX graphics adapters, and support Sata hard drives up to 1.5TB.
The new Precision workstations are aimed at professionals working with demanding applications in fields such as engineering, media, entertainment, biosciences, exploration, economic modelling and risk analysis, Dell said.
