The US military is using the internet in combat for the first time, to conduct operations in Afghanistan.
A secure website built using "tactical web page technology" allows commanders at Bagram air base in Afghanistan and in the US to direct any fighting.
The internet-based system collects all information and communication available in a single place. Commanders can also use chatroom technology to warn of enemy movements.
Maps showing friendly and enemy positions are also available and updated in real time.
A Pentagon spokesman said the US military was confident the website is secure from hackers as it is shielded behind several intrusion detectors and firewalls on its own local area network.
