Microsoft may begin training the police in ways to break the encryption built into its forthcoming Vista operating system.
The news was revealed in a parliamentary committee session in which Professor Ross Anderson of Cambridge University warned MPs that if such a move was being considered then the police should start learning sooner rather than later.
The need to decrypt hard drives was a prominent reason given for extending the length of time that the police could hold terrorism suspects.
"It is our goal to give PC users the control and confidence they need so they can continue to get the most out of their PCs," said a Microsoft spokeswoman.
"At the same time, we are working with law enforcement to help them understand its security features and will continue to partner with governments, law enforcement and industry to help make the internet a safer place to learn and communicate."
This is not the first time such links between Microsoft and the security services have received attention. In 1999 journalist Duncan Campbell alleged that Microsoft had reached a secret deal with the National Security Agency in the US to allow backdoor access to Microsoft systems.
Do you agree?

OBEY!
Once America, the beacon of individual rights, slowly and surely removes individual freedoms (sold to Soccer Mom's as the "need to protect our children from terrorists and evil-doers"), this will spread out quickly to other countries.
Therefore, I say to all you citizens of the world ... OBEY.
And by the way, who says you have the "RIGHT to privacy" from the government? You have the right to STFU and do as you are told.

Utimaco
I know Utimaco claims their encryption software has never been hacked. Wonder how well it holds up against the NSA.

Systems always have a backdoor
Windows for sure has some done by design and some other done/found by hackers. this is not new. If you are worried about security I think the best option is to migrate away from windows. Windows will have security issues by design as long as it is widely used.

Dump Windows
Microsoft will be teaching citizens who value their rights to get off Windows and switch to Linux.

Cryptography
Its a very quiet international law that all software that deals with encryption must have a backdoor entry. I can't say much, what I do know is that NSA / GCHQ / and other agencies have access to pretty much any software that deals with encryption. Some companies have even developed such amazing encryption that when the agencies have gotten hold of it, it has dissapeared, and the companies have gone back to square one developing. Remember thats what these agencies do, they crack codes.

time for a different OS
So the crypto is backdoored, no surprise. The whole &*()! OS is likely backdoored too. I expect enough people will find out and this will push even more folks to ditch M$ products.
