Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has warned Google that it may face problems by creating a new operating system, according to reports.
Chrome OS was announced to much fanfare last week, although it has yet to be demonstrated, and Google is already enjoying much success with its open-source Android platform for mobile devices.
Ballmer said in an onstage Q&A session following his speech at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans yesterday that Google is making the same mistake as Microsoft did in the days when it produced Windows NT and Windows 95.
"I don't know if they can't make up their mind, or what the problem is over there," he said. "The last time I checked you don't need two client operating systems."
Ballmer also ruled out Microsoft creating a new operating system.
"What we need to do is continue to evolve Windows, Windows applications, Internet Explorer, the way IE works in totality with Windows, and how we build applications like Office," he said. "We need to make sure we can bring our customers and partners with us."
Do you agree?
How Many
Windows CE (non X86 devices)
Windows Embbeded (Componets of XP but not full OS)
Windows XP for embedded (For industrial customers that don't want Vista
Windows Vista (nuff said)
Windows 7 (no embedded product named as yet)
Into 2010 MS will be supporting
CE XP embedded XP Pro (through the embedded channel) Vista and Windows 7 -
All I can say is marketing bods should never run technology companies without strong technical over site. Ballmer is MS's biggest long term problem. Before they were a technology company with aggressive marketing. Now they seem to be loosing the technology bit that they had, even if it was just evaluating who's stuff to copy, re-implement or buy.

Typical Ballmer FUD and bluster...
... Microsoft is to the software industry as the U.S. Republican Party is to politics. Both achieved great success with strategies specifically designed to target specific demographic groups and market niches. As long as those target groups and market niches mattered, success continued. But time has moved on and circumstances changed--and both Microsoft and the GOP now find their former winning strategies albatrosses around their respective necks.

2 operating systems is what MS have now
Does SB not know his own company?
As far as I know, Windows mobile and Windows desktop (XP, VIsta or 7) are two entirely different operating systems. Well, 4 really.
Android is a mobile system, Chrome is a desktop system.
Mind you I think we have more than enough operating systems at present. I would far rather see the effort go into making Limux more appealing.
