Verizon has updated its wide area network (WAN) enterprise services line, partnering with network appliance specialist Riverbed Technology to add WAN optimisation components to its existing hosted services.
Verizon hopes to add the ability to monitor application traffic and fine-tune the performance of home office, branch office and telecommuter systems connected through WAN deployments.
The optimisation features will be added to Verizon's enterprise services branch, and will be offered in 142 countries.
The service includes IT management and consulting features, and is offered in three forms ranging from a minimal 'monitor and notify' level to a full service that covers day-to-day management, reporting, advising and analysis.
Verizon will also offer the option of purchasing the WAN analysis and advising features separately through its consulting services.
Steve Capozzi, senior product marketing manager at Verizon, told V3.co.uk that the addition of WAN optimisation services is a natural progression for Verizon, given the growing ranks of employees telecommuting and working from branch offices.
"WAN optimisation is universally accepted to be a $1.2bn [£781m] industry, and there is a lot of room for growth," he said. "That says a lot for this industry and how fast customers are adopting it."
