Genie, BT's mobile information portal, is to offer mobile phone users an unmetered internet access service for £20 a month.
Customers who buy a mobile phone online through the Genie portal will be offered a choice of tariffs which include unmetered Wap and/or text messaging as part of the monthly subscription.
"We're offering customers 'all you can eat' mobile internet access for just £20 a month. We're directly responding to the needs of the mobile generation who rely on the internet to manage their busy lives," said Kent Thexton, managing director at Genie.
The portal, which has over 1.4 million registrations in the UK, will also offer customers a £10 a month service to include a free unlimited short message service facility. A pre-pay option will be launched "shortly" and GPRS tariffs and handsets will be introduced at the start of next year.
Internet service provider Breathe has offered 24 x 7 freephone Wap access to Orange and One2One users throughout November. Breathe chief operating officer Sean Gardner told vnunet.com earlier this week that the company is considering repeating the offer in the future with access for customers from all networks
UK mobile operator Orange launched a service at the start of this month which offers subscribers free Wap calls at the weekends until the end of February next year. Orange users will have free unlimited Wap access from midnight Friday until midnight Sunday every weekend until 28 February.
