Virgin Media is to launch a commercial 100Mbit/s broadband service later this year, and has plans to trial a 200Mbit/s service.
The company made the announcement as part of its 2009 fourth-quarter results, which showed a 3.3 per cent rise in revenue to £980m.
Virgin Media said that it had increased the number of homes on its 20Mbit/s or higher services by 45 per cent, and had grown its cable broadband customer base by 6,500 since the fourth quarter of 2008.
Neil Berkett, chief executive at Virgin Media, claimed that the company had grown the size and quality of its customer base, and that many customers had bought higher value products in response to a more varied portfolio.
"We are laying the foundations for long-term growth. Virgin Media's cable network will, for the foreseeable future, provide an unparalleled platform for delivering successive generations of new and innovative services," he said.
Virgin Media will be hoping that the figures signal the start of a big year. The firm launched Virgin Media Business earlier this month, and Berkett said at the time that he was confident that the service would prove attractive.
"We hope that by rebranding to Virgin Media Business we can expand our customer base and offer a viable and compelling alternative to BT," he said.

it's shame their current service sucks so much! Will be interesting to see how they try to manage this one!

Good stuff
Virgin currently provides a much more reliable and faster service than any other ISP. It's also the only ISP that actually gets anywhere near it's headline speeds (unlike ADSL providers who normally only provide 20%).
For those who want a premium service I think this is great.

big prices poor service
they are putting up the price of our band (the lowest speed) while leaving the ohers - but that was burried in the small print.
Our band width should be 10mb but it is never more than dead slow because of their 'fair use policy' - if you do even normal surfing you go over the limits and then your band with is squeezed down even more. That is the only way they can promise high bandwidth - because they never acutally let you have it !!

An even Faster Method of reaching Cut Off
If your wondering how they can acheive this, well its simple they have so much bandwith due to the amount of people they have handicapped for even to dare upload 1kb of data using a torrent, regardless if you have reached the hidden in the SMALL PRINT fair usage tarrif or not.

Traffic Management
Virginmedia does not traffic its 50Mbit service; it also provides unlimited online secure storage too. 100Mbit will be rolled out in the last quarter od 2010 and 200Mbit trials are currently in place. Also look out for big increases in upload speeds this year.

XXL
I was a 20mbit user & constantly annoyed at being throttled down for using what I paid for. As far as I could see, VM throttle their higher paying users, to satisfy their lower paying users. In other words, if you dare to keep downloading stuff with your wider band connection, you'll be throttling the narrower band customers in your immediate neighbourhood - VM see that as unfair.
I bit the bullet & paid extra for the 50mbit service. I never get throttled, to my knowledge. I get amazing speeds from a lot of sources. It's a pleasure to watch a large download (5Gb+) coming down at 6200kb/s.
Hopefully VM will keep their 100mbit rollout in the XXL pay band & I'll get to see more than 12000kb/s. I won't be paying any more than I already do now - not in this financial climate, anyway.
