Microsoft enters security market

Microsoft has launched its first security software product in the form of a firewall and web caching tool.

The software giant's Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server is aimed at securing and enhancing the performance of its .Net enterprise servers.

ISA Server uses packet, circuit-level and application filtering techniques to protect multiple network layers. It also supports virtual private networks and predefines about 100 application protocols. Administrators can also add further protocols based on their type and transmission control.

The server, which includes a high-speed web cache, also provides network firewall protection, defends against external attacks and notifies network administrators of suspicious activities.

Paul Flessner, senior vice president of Microsoft's .Net enterprise servers, said: "ISA Server is a key member of the .Net enterprise server family which offers customers the essential infrastructure they require to succeed in the new digital economy."

Rob Enderle, an analyst at researcher Giga Information Group, said it was necessary for Microsoft to add a security element to .Net servers. "It appears to be a good offering," he said.

The product, which will be available in standard and enterprise editions, was tested by independent facility ICSA Labs in December and awarded certification on 29 January.
