Hutchison Whampoa's UK 3G operator, 3, yesterday revealed that it has tapped US company Bitfone to deliver firmware over the air update technology for mobile phones.
Bitfone will deploy its MVP Open Mobile Alliance standards-based device management system to deliver over the air firmware updates to 3 subscribers, providing proactive enhancements direct to the handset.
Bitfone's MVP v2.0 offering was first announced in July 2005 and allows mobile operators to deploy software updates and feature enhancements, and to customise devices, while in the hands of their subscribers.
MVP addresses the complex operational and commercial requirements required to successfully deploy large scale firmware over the air updates, according to Bitfone.
David Cooper, chief technical officer at 3 UK, said: "Over the air firmware updates are a critical component to deliver superior customer service and to support our entertainment and information services as well as our range of advanced 3G devices.
"We selected Bitfone based on the value and its comprehensive solution, support and innovation in the firmware over the air market."
