18 Jan 2007, Iain Thomson , V3
A Singaporean teenager who used his neighbour's Wi-Fi connection without permission has been given an 18-month suspended sentence.
Garyl Tan Jia Luo, 17, was also sentenced to 80 hours community service after he was found guilty of breaking Singapore's Computer Misuse Act.
He faces a possible sentence of up to three years and fine of 10,000 Singapore dollars (£3,300) if he reoffends.
Senior District Judge Bala Reddy cited a probation report saying that the youth had been addicted to internet gaming at the time of the offence, and that he had "few friends, if not none", according to Associated Press.
A second Singaporean is facing similar charges after he accessed someone else's Wi-Fi system 60 times.
Do you agree?
Outrageous
Struck the right course? Cor! What's your monicker - 'Hang 'em Thomson'?
It is victimless - there is no property theft, no assault - this is a made up crime. You might as well send someone to jail for giving you a funny look. "Supposing he'd been downloading pirated material and the home owners got a summons from the recording industry?" Well then that would be different - but you're supposing. Suppose you thought things out before posting.

victimless ?
suppose the owners got their download speed reduced and were billed for the amount they'd run over their download limit due to neighbours using their broadband ?
Anyway its using a resource with out permission from the owner which is after all theft.
