Facebook has overtaken arch rival MySpace in the battle for online popularity, according to the latest independent figures.
Facebook attracted 123.9 million unique visitors and 50.6 billion page views in May compared with 114.6 million unique visitors and 45.4 billion page views at MySpace, comScore figures reveal.
The news has ruffled the feathers of Rupert Murdoch, head of News International which owns MySpace.
At the Lions 2008 International Advertising Festival in Cannes, Murdoch dismissed Facebook as "flavour of the month" and a mere "directory", while MySpace, he said, is a "real social networking site".
MySpace, bought by News International in 2005 for £315m, has just undergone a redesign to de-clutter its home page.
It is still more popular in the US than Facebook, notching up 73.7 million unique visitors in May versus Facebook's 35.6 million.
Facebook has already proved more popular than its rival in the UK, having overtaken MySpace in September last year.
Facebook is estimated to be worth around $15bn, after Microsoft invested $240m for a 1.6 per cent stake in October last year.
Do you agree?
Professional networking is close behind
Everyone knew Facebook would eventually overtake Myspace. Facebook has a large range of members 18-35, compared to the teenagers using myspace. Eventually professional networking sites will over take Facebook. Professional networking sites like Linkedin.com and Schmoozii.com (Schmoozii just launched) are targeted at professionals from 22 - 62. The ranges is much greater so they will win out.

facebook myspace
don't you think that facebook is more popular in the UK because most employers banned myspace last year, they were a little slower banning facebook. This could account for difference in numbers

I wouldn't say facebook has more accounts
I wouldn't say facebook has more accounts because they count the deactivated accounts, so numbers couldn't be exactly those that Facebook might claim to have..
