Samsung is to release a mobile phone with a 3.1in touch-screen and what it claims is the first on-board 12-megapixel camera.
The Pixon12 has been designed with speed in mind, and Samsung said that users will be able to capture and upload pictures quickly and easily. The firm also talked up its use as a mobile browser.
The phone lets users organise and manage photos by tags, file names, ratings and time via the touch-screen. Photos can also be brought up in groups, the firm said.
Connectivity includes GRPS, Edge and HSUPA, and the device has GPS mapping and an FM radio. The unit measures 108x53x13.8mm making it deeper yet smaller than much of the competition, including the BlackBerry Storm and Apple iPhone.
Samsung said that the Micro SD memory can be expanded to 16GB, which will be useful as the Pixon12 comes with a measly 150MB onboard memory.
"The Pixon12 is testament to how Samsung's ongoing consumer research enables us to develop ground-breaking products that do not just meet but surpass our customers' expectations," said J K Shin, head of the mobile communication division at Samsung Electronics.
"Speedy access to the camera mode, fast shutter speed and quick browsing are some of the key factors consumers are looking for in their mobile phone cameras. We are very pleased to introduce the world's first 12-megapixel cameraphone that holds the answer to these pressing needs."
The Pixon12 is due to start shipping from the end of June in Europe.
Sony Ericsson has also been talking up its own 12-megapixel camera Idou model since earlier this year, but it is not expected to arrive until the fourth quarter.
