Virgin Media has launched a digital TV service for consumers living in non-cabled areas.
The company is looking to expand the availability of its quad-play offerings of broadband, phone, mobile and TV services beyond its cable network.
Virgin Media's service comes in the form of a new set-top box that offers the full range of digital terrestrial television services, including over 40 free-to-air TV channels, 25 digital radio stations and an eight-day on-screen TV guide.
The set-top box is about the same size as a video tape and will be free to any new non-cable customers taking the firm's 8Mbps broadband and Talk Anytime phone bundle.
A one-off charge of £40 will apply for non-cable customers taking a broadband service on its own.
"The digital switchover is just around the corner and we can now offer consumers across the UK a simple and low-cost way of making the digital leap, even if they cannot get cable services," said Philip Snalune, managing director of non-cable at Virgin Media.
"This is just the first step and our aim is to offer more advanced TV services across the UK throughout 2008."

Virgin freeview
This is just Freeview from a Virgin box - now if it was HD then it might be worth shouting about, but that won't happen for 10 years or more.

VIRGIN MEDIA
I think virgin media's launch of uk wide digital tv in non-cabled areas is the best thing to give sky some relistic run for there money.Sky have had a easy run for years and it is not before time virgin media will force sky to fetch there prices down to a realistic level.

Virgin Media in a non-cabled area
If you want virgin you beter pray you are in a cabled area because if you are not you can kiss all the high speed broadband and cable tv goodbye. Now don't go thinking Sky is any better because they plainly are not!!! ADSL Broandband ment to be 8 mb down the phoneline I was lucky when it reached dial up speed!!
There wonderfull TV lets just say if you live within about 2 miles of a airport and then forget sky TV right now, thats if your not in one of there "blackspots".
As for there so called wonderful tech support they are no better than virgin media tech support which I shall point out is rubbish at best and always seam to have a "large number of callers today". Virgin Media and Sky its time for you to stop fighting over your tv channels which are not that great anyway. Unless you like reruns of the simpsons and wonderfull pokemon on sky one and the free TV virgin offers is FREEVIEW by any other name, which you also can't get everywere in the UK.
Get it together guys cause you plainly suck as you are.

If the digital TV is anything like the HIGH SPEED!!! Broadband....lets hope you can watch in slow motion....by HIGH speed they can oly be referring to is the charges for the service they ACTUALLY give..my friend has just decided to get the all singin all dancing "VIRGIN HIGH SPEED NON CABLE INTERNET" but instead of the 6.5 mb d/load speed he only manged to reach 9 kb during peek times...so unless he wants to sit up through the night he is up the creek without a paddle...thank you virgin, you are obviously virgin on the rediculous if you expect people to pay for this crap!!
