Open source database provider Ingres has hired former New York Stock Exchange executive Rogert Burkhardt as its chief operating officer.
Burkhardt most recently worked as chief information officer for the New York Stock Exchange where he headed up the electronic transformation of the exchange and allowed for trading to resume the week after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
"Ingres stands alone in embracing open source as a means by which to offer customers a greater return on their enterprise database investments," Burkhardt said in a statement.
Ingres was spun out of Computer Associates earlier this year. The company has built up its management team in recent months with executives from industry giants including Oracle, Red Hat and CA.
The vendor aims to sell support services for its database technology, and is seeking to supply commercial software on appliances. Such devices offer a foundation of basic components including an operating system and database on top of which developers create their own bespoke applications.
