Mac users gear up for OpenOffice 3.0

Mac users should have access to the OpenOffice.org suite of applications by the end of September 2008.
Originally due for release in mid-September at the OpenOffice.org Annual Conference in Lyon, the alternative to Microsoft Office for OS X had been delayed following "issues with non-English transcripts", an OpenOffice.org spokesman told vnunet.com.
"We hope this issue will be resolved by the end of this month," he added.
OpenOffice.org is an open source productivity suite which is free to download and use.
Version 3.0 will be the first to accommodate Mac users without requiring them to install the X11 Window System, an interface that allows Unix-based applications to work on Macs.
OpenOffice.org 3.0 will also be the first word processing and spreadsheet application suite available to Mac users at no cost, representing a viable alternative to Apple's iWork and Microsoft's more expensive Office 2008 for Mac.

First Free Suite?
I've been using NeoOffice (based on OpenOffice) on my Mac for quite some time now, and I don't recall ever having to pay for it!
Having said that, I am pleased that OpenOffice is 'going native', and look forward to giving it a try.
