Microsoft is asking users testing its new Windows 7 release candidate to return to their old operating systems.
In a posting to the Engineering Windows 7 blog on Tuesday, Microsoft developers said that users testing the new build of Windows 7 would be asked to revert to Windows Vista rather than the beta releases which testers are currently running.
The reasoning behind the move is that nearly everyone who buys and installs Windows 7 will be doing so from a Vista machine, rather than a beta release of Windows 7. In order to obtain correct feedback, testers will be asked to install the release candidate from Vista.
"We're just trying to be deterministic and engineer the product for the real world," the developers explained.
"As an extended member of the development team and a participant in the beta programme that has helped us so much, we want to ask that you experience real-world setup and provide us real-world telemetry."
The developers noted that they will include an option for testers who do not wish to revert their systems.
Microsoft's request to testers comes before a release candidate build that some believe will be just weeks away. Last month an accidental posting by Microsoft dated the release candidate build as May 2009.
The final commercial versions of the new Windows operating system are expected to be released as early as November of this year.

They really want you to do a clean install of W7 RC but a headline saying they want you to go back to Vista will get more eyeballs. There is no shortage of retards online.

Real World
I have Windows XP. Not sure that my real world and Microsofts real world are in Sync. I suppose that there is more chance that people will want to move off Vista than XP.

Maybe it is right, maybe it is wrong
The truthfulness of the article is not in question.
The real question is that the idea behind the move from MS is not 100% accurate. In my expectation, we will have a double number of people upgrading to 7 from a computer with Windows XP than from a computer with Vista.
So why bother with Vista? Have all beta testers downgrading to XP at all.

XP Users are Microsoft abandoning them?
Have recently bought a net book using XP, Microsoft look to be abandoning XP support whilst it appears they are still selling this operating system. This appears to letting down current users of one of their products. I hope everybody who uses XP protests to Microsoft.

Windows 7
I have applied window 7 to an old machine running XP and it works extremely well, there is no way i would consider installing vista on it, it would grind to a halt!
Microsoft are out of touch with their customers, as i know there are many of us pining our hopes on windows 7. I for one will not be moving to Vista either personally or professionally.
