Industry analysts believe that Sony's long-delayed PlayStation 3 will still lead sales in North America, despite rivals Microsoft and Nintendo stealing a march on the market.
Yankee Group predicts that, despite intense competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, the PlayStation 3 will take the crown by narrow margin.
The analysts believe that Microsoft offers the most competition at present, having got off to a flying start by launching its Xbox 360 nearly 12 months before the PlayStation 3.
Yankee Group estimates that the PlayStation 3 will have sold about 30 million units by 2011, and will account for 44 per cent of cumulative third-generation console sales in North America.
Microsoft will have sold nearly 27 million units, accounting for 40 per cent of the market, and Nintendo will come in at a distant third, having sold just over 11 million units, accounting for 16 per cent of the market.
"By the time third-generation consoles reach market maturity in 2011, the PlayStation 3 will once again be the market leader," said Michael Goodman, Yankee Group media & entertainment strategies senior analyst.
"With a growing installed base of connected consoles, content owners are beginning to recognise the potential video game consoles offer as a distribution channel.
"Additionally, these platforms will serve as a strong medium for advertising, validating the growing market for in-game and around-game advertising."
Yankee Group also believes that fewer consoles will be sold this generation, primarily due to higher per-unit prices.

The Nintendo Wii is going to sell 40 million units by 2011.
xbox 360 is gonna have about 28 million units go.
playstation 3 is going to sell aobut 24 million (as long as the price drops to around 250$ eventually)

there is absolutely no way the playstation 3 is going to win the console war.
and there is no way anythign is coming close to the nintendo wii.
they're all gonna be great systyems. but people dont want to pay 600$ for something that is essentially the same as the last generations unit.
BUT PEOPLE WILL PAY $250 FOR SOMETHING THAT COMPLETELY INNOVATES THE GAMING INDUSTRY!
the nintendo wii, is going to have 4 million units sold by january 1st 2007.
and 20 million by january 1st 2008.
and 40 million by jan 1st 2011
and the next system they have will completely out-do the Wii. and every other gaming console.
its too bad the toehrs cant go otu of business... cuz people will buy all 3. encouraging microsoft and sony to keep recreating thier old systems and ripping you off.

xbox 360 is the best
then the wii
i was disapointed at the ps3 at one point i was worried that the ps3 could win but i know now the xbox 360 is the ultimate im gonig to try and get the xbox 360 elite.

The 360 will win with better quality and lithing textures.the ps3 is too much money poorer lighting and graphics.360 will also win for price Halo 3 and market.also i am not a nerd.
