Sun abandons its own Linux flavour

Sun Microsystems has scrapped its own flavour of Linux and will support distributions from other vendors.

The company, which introduced its own Red Hat-based Linux distribution last August, said that customers did not want another version of Linux when more than enough were already available.

Sun is now likely to support Linux distributions from vendors including Red Hat and UnitedLinux.

According to news website CRN.com, Sun explained that one reason for scrapping its own version of Linux is that "people are writing to a distribution, not to Linux".

Sun is also working on interoperability between Sun Solaris and Linux applications.

The vendor is committed to getting Linux applications running on Solaris without modification as part of its Project Orion initiative, which pulls Sun software together under one umbrella.
