Bank on Java to cut costs, says Sun

Sun Microsystems has lifted the lid on its retail banking strategy, claiming that financial organisations deploying its Java back-end and thin-client Sun Ray systems can save up to 70 per cent on IT costs.

The strategy centres on use of the Sun Ray client in conjunction with Sun's newly unveiled Java-powered Branch Controller for retail banking branches.

The Java Branch Controller is designed to boost the compatibility of the client with legacy applications, banking applications and networked devices such as cash drawers and printers.

By deploying this technology, Sun said, bank staff get a single view of all of the customer's data, such as multiple account balances, credit card, brokerage, and mortgage statements, so providing better customer service and enabling cross-selling and up-selling.

"Banks are anxious to reduce costs of operations and accelerate revenue opportunities inside their branches," said David Moore, Sun's global banking manager.
