Mobile giant Vodafone is offering weekly prizes in an effort to encourage developers to write new widgets for its Vodafone Widgets Developer Platform.
The Summer of Widgets competition runs from 6 July to 30 August, and offers a Samsung NC20 netbook bundled with a Nokia N96 handset to the three best new widgets.
Entries will be judged according to ease of use, creativity and value to the potential user, according to Vodafone.
"The Summer of Widgets competition is designed to excite developers to explore mobile widget technology in more detail, which we believe will play a significant role in shaping consumers' experience of the mobile internet," said Amer Hasan, senior manager of applications and developer programmes at Vodafone.
"To enter this competition, developers need to upload their widgets to the Vodafone Widgets Developer Platform, giving them the chance to distribute to, and get feedback from, a potential audience of more than two million Vodafone customers with compatible handsets across eight of Vodafone's biggest markets."
Developers will need to create English-language widgets for the S60 platform to be eligible for the competition, said Vodafone.
