Google launches newspaper archive search

Google News Archive Search allows users to research newspaper and magazine articles

Google has expanded its News search to include an archive that goes back as far as the 1800s. 

News Archive Search allows users to research newspaper and magazine articles from sources including The Guardian, Time, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Factiva and Lexis Nexis. 

Google only provides the index, and the content is stored on the originating source's website. News Archive Search provide links to free and paid-for content. Searchers are also presented with a timeline to browse articles in chronological order.

"News Archive Search provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives," Google explained.

"Users can search for events, people and ideas, and see how they have been described over time.

"In addition to searching for the most relevant articles for their query, users can get an historical overview of the results by browsing an automatically created timeline.

"Articles related to a single story within a given time period are grouped together to allow users to see a broad perspective on the events."
