DSL Forum rings in VoIP interoperability

The DSL Forum has published a technical specification aiming to boost the interoperability of VoIP devices by defining a set of standard functions for terminal adaptors.

Technical Report 122 (PDF download) has been drafted to provide subscribers with common feature sets for VoIP devices.

The DSL Forum said that the move paves the way for increased interoperability for VoIP services.

TR-122 is designed to make VoIP services easier to use for domestic customers by specifying consistent functionality across devices and service providers.

The specification builds on the DSL Forum's earlier TR-094 and TR-104 specifications for multi-service delivery for home networks and provisioning parameters for VoIP customer premises equipment.

"Service providers worldwide are increasingly placing VoIP deployment at the top of their value-added services agenda, and customers already have a wide range of VoIP services and devices to choose from," said Michael Brusca, chairman and president of the DSL Forum.

"Industry implementation of TR-122 will assist in attaining ubiquitous VoIP services."

DSL is the world's most prevalent broadband access technology, accounting for over 60 per cent of subscribers receiving broadband services.
