Microsoft in Sync with Ford

Microsoft's Sync suite will debut in two Ford models during 2007

Microsoft and Ford are set to kick off the new year with co-ordinated announcements of a new software suite for cars called Sync, according to US reports.

Sync is expected to get its first public showing on 7 January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and at press previews for next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. 

A report published in the Wall Street Journal said that Sync will debut in two Ford models during 2007, the Focus and Five Hundred, and will then be available across its entire range in 2008. It is expected to be added to Lincoln and Mercury models later. 

The software suite will allow drivers to use hands-free mobiles while driving, receive emails on the move, and download and play music. Satellite navigation systems will also be integrated.

Microsoft's last major link-up with Ford was just over a year ago with the announcement of a mobile office system for truck-driving contractors available as a dealer-installed accessory in 2006.

It is not yet known whether Sync will come as standard with models or be an optional add-on.
