AVG continues to be one of the most popular free antivirus programs available on the internet and it maintains this position with a combination of effective protection and an easy to use interface.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition improves on both areas, and is an essential upgrade, as updates will be stopped for the previous version. If you already have AVG installed it is best to click on the upgrade option when it is offered. If you have never installed it before, this is the download to use. We would recommend disconnecting from the internet during installation as there will a period where there is no protection.
As noted the interface of AVG Free has been improved and it is easier to see what protection AVG is providing and what needs attention via icons in the main part of the screen. Tabs along the left hand side give quick access to important information on updates and ongoing scans.
In addition to traditional antivirus protection, AVG Free now offers protection from Spyware without installing extra software.
Note that the new 2013 edition ships with a new Windows 8 user interface and a whole host of performance improvements.
Do you agree?
A good anti virus programme.
After having tried many paid for anti virus programmes I decided to give this one a go before paying for another one. My verdict this is as good as most popular paid for versions.
The software can easily be set up for downloading daily updates, and to scan your computer on a daily basis at the time you want.
It has a good email checker too that even stamps your email to show it has been scanned and is free of any virus, something that was in fact lacking with the paid for versions that I have had.
Full marks for this one that is man enough to protect your computer while on the net.

A Must Have
Having used many of the more famous anti-virus apps, I've settled on AVG for quite some time. It has been very effective and has often blocked what the others let through.
One major plus for AVG is that it is not a resource hog like many of the others. I've notice no appreciable loss of performance while AVG is running.
Now for the linux version...

Brilliant Programme and highly recommended, I was paying a monthly subscription anti-virus and switched to this as it was free - it found 2 trojans that mine didn't.

Question
Can AVG Antivirus 7.1.375 (Free Edition) be down loaded on to MS XP Pro
Posted by John Robinson, 28 Feb 2006
AVG is so much better then the rest!
I have had Norton and other pay antivirus programs. NONE clean as well as AVG free! It is truly the best. Easy to use, and great updates to keep your computer running smooth. AVG will find a virus the other miss. You will love it!

AVG does not work with Roxio
Unfortunately you dont find this out until attempting to install that the programme does not work with my version of Roxio and that an update is required. Roxio want £45 for update - not so free after all.

AOL question from first page
I would like the question aswered; if possible. Why does AOL keep warning-not to use this virus protection? AO
Posted by Maurie, 14 Aug 2006
Suits me fine
Tried most AV programs but always come back to AVG free.Runs nicely without slowing or freezing system.Housecall online scan shows no virus,so it does work. You could do a lot worse than installing AVG free. Its brilliant!!

AOL/AVG
If I understand you right, the AOL package comes bundled with McAfee antivirus. It is most often not a good idea to have more than one resident antivirus program running at a time, since these can interfer with each other and actually reduce the resulting security, as well as hog unnecessary amounts of resources from your computer. In some cases you may even get false errors where one program scans the other programs' quarantine. Some antiviral and antispyware applications can detect the presence of other such applications in a system, and will issue a warning because of this.

Running AVG with another AV program
In reply to 'Helen'. You should not have more than one antivirus program installed, but which one you decide to remove is up to you. having two installed can cause system instability and frequent crashes.

No more AVG Free?
I've just had a message saying that the AVG 7.1 free edition ceases being free in January. Does this apply to the 7.5 edition?
If not it looks like we will all lose the best antivirus programme around.

AVGFree
This has been the best anti-virus protection for free yet.It actually lets me know right away if there is a problem.I sure hope it continues to be free for us that cannot afford to pay for it.Thank you AVG for your support.

AVG opening message today says its will stop being free next year. Is this true? Is there an alternative to having to buy an upgrade?

AVG surpassed my expectations
I was a bit cautious about AVG, thought it was just another one of those cheap anti virus products sold off the net but boy was I wrong, though it lacks anti-popup and other advanced features I gotta say it does the job even when you dont prompt it to. I certainly will be looking out for it once a full version hits the stores! Bye, bye Norton your times up son!

AVG - free no more?
I have been using AVG free antivirus software for a few years now and have been very pleased with its performance. However, recently I received an e-mail from AVG advising that the free programme would expire in January 2007 and if I wanted to continue protecting my PC I would have to buy a version of AVG. Does anyone know why they are discontinuing the free software?

Superior AVG
I'm so impressed with AVG that I'm not renewing Norton AntiVirus and signing up for the AVG Professional version.
It found a Trojan that Norton didn't find, it's smarter, faster, and downloads updates in the time it takes Norton to paste up the next page.
No contest.

Not out of date and still free
For those who wondered if their AVG 7.1 was not going to be free anymore - no worries, it is being replaced by the newer version which is still free. The older version is simply being discontinued, presumably in order to concentrate their efforts on the newer models.

Solid, effective and free
It's free and does not use close to the memory that McAfee and Norton use. I use this on my computers and my clients, and have yet to have any problems.

Signing Up To Verify Your Claims
As a IT Pro, it's a normal practice to broaden one's software efficiency for recommendation to clients and others. I've heard about AVG a lot but not given it a shot until now. Having tried a number of standard AV, tonight, I'm uninstalling my Windows Live One Care for AVG for a firsthand evaluation...because you all say it's good.

I don't think is that good!
I don't understand why the review came out with such a good result. To me it looks like that you're talking more about visual layout than about functionality. I'm using AVAST!, which is also for FREE, but offers also anti-rootkit and catches viruses, which AVG does NOT. All the functions you're mentioning boys are STANDART for all antivirus software! Where did you mentioned that AVG does NOT offer in this version automatic update (you have to do manually when your ikon turns grey, which a key to computer protection. From my experience and many of the other users AVG is almost "useless". Should I think that your review is a PAID ADD of the most known software?

AVG for XP
After wasting a total of 8 hours downloading AVG from 2 sites which claimed were compatible with XP, I find the of all the choices within the program, XP is not included.
vnunet.com comment: choices? We're confused. It's compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista and may even work on 98SE and Me. It should be a case of download and install. ALL software, unless it's Vista-specific (ie. a Vista tweaking tool), will work on XP.

AVG Free is good
Yeah, I've been using free AVG for about three years. They send updates nearly everyday. AVG does what it says on the box!! and it doesn't cost a penny. Well recommended.
Posted by Alan, 17 Mar 2008
Impressive? Free maybe....
As as experienced PC builder, I wouldn't recommend AVG, totally slows down computers and is very bulky in size.Avast! is far better has smaller update sizes and uses far less memory.

System Hog
I upgraded from AVG 7, having used AVG since at least version 5 or maybe earlier. My PC, a Pentium 4 3+Ghz machine with 2Gb of RAM ground to a snail's pace. I uninstalled AVG 8, and the PC ran fine. System Monitor showed AVG hogging 95-98% of system resources.
I have now switched to AVAST! and the PC is running fine. AVG 8 also nags you to buy the commercial version, and I am afraid Grisoft have made some serious technical and commercial errors with this version.

AVG 8 free
I have used avg free for several months now. However, since updating to avg8 it requires reinstalling every other day. The same fault re-occurs (a) Resident Shield not active. (b) Anti Virus database is out of date. (c) Anti Spyware database is outdated. The only way to resolve this appears to require re-installing. This is of course totally impractical. Do any other Computeractive readers experience this?

AVG Free or Not at all
All comments are not really saying continue with new 8 series or to look at another free system. I have been satisfied with AVG 7.5, have I been lucky or not. Should I install AVG 8?
vnunet.com comment: support for v7.5 will continue until December 2008, although after this date you really will have to upgrade to v8 if you want definition updates.
Posted by stuart, 26 May 2008
Bad performance
I have been using AVG for years now, and have been really satisfied with it up to version 7.5. But the new one is a giant step back.
The scanner is *very* slow (about 3 times slower than v7.5), and the background scanner is so slow and takes so much CPU that it almost locks down my Pentium 600.
The user interface (free version) became very basic. If you shut off the link check (which slows down Firefox and produces extra traffic), the tray icon wil constantly signal an error,....
Again, I *have* been a fan of AVG for years, but now I have to say: KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF !!

AVG free
AVG anti virus package continues to be an excellent base protection programme, don't forget the free part :-) it works and it does not cost money, that has to be good, and it is.
I have downloaded the newer AVG 8 onto 3 machines for friends with not a single problem, the only caveat that I would add there though is not to use the AVG site itself as it is incredibly, slow running at near dial up speeds, satellite sites are much swifter.

Ever heard of open source?
You write: "The word 'free' often equates to an inferior product but, in this case, there is no doubt that this is a professional product.".
I'm sorry? I take it you've never heard of open source software? I wouldn't call GNU/Linux inferior to Windows in any situation. Perhaps you should try a different opening line next time.
vnunet.com: in the eyes of the average PC user, free commercial software is often seen as inferior, from our experience (in publishing). This statement holds true, even though we agree there is excellent freeware and opensource software available.

AVG 8 UPDATES
I am a very big fan of AVG. I am rather disappointed with the latest version:
1. The scan is dead slow - I stoped it after 2hours (not even half-way), (AVG 7.5 used to take about 1hr 30min for my whole system).
2. The update keeps failing - solution go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update download the latest update, either download it or copy the file/s to the AVG8 folder (under AVG). Go into TOOLS then UPDATE FROM DIRECTORY, locate the AVG8 folder, and select ok. Within a couple of seconds you should see a prompt for the update.
3. The Link Scanner is slow on Firefox, so disable the link scanner.
Conclusion a nice interface, providing AVG iron out all the problems, it should be as good as 7.5!!!

AVG 8.01
So far I've been to 3 sites to get this version. Every single site has had problems. From AVG direct, I got a whole 87% of the download before it stopped and refused to start again. Another suggested a site... I went there and it downloaded in less than 30 minutes only to tell me that its corrupt! I can't seem to get a copy to download completely from anywhere, which is really frustrating.

Evaluating AVG 8.0 Free
I find AVG Anti-Virus Free very powerful in eradicating the particular virus that always appeared on my computer screen. Before, I used AVG 7.5 but it was not strong enough to eliminate that nuisance virus. The same applies to Norton. It could not fight that particular virus. However, thanks to AVG Free. It really managed to clean up my computer.
However I found out that there are some few setbacks with AVG Free which I noticed on my computer. So what I can say is that AVG 7.5 is much more efficient but not so strong compared with AVG 8.0 Free. At the moment I'm using AVG version 8.0.169 - Free Trial for one month.
My comment on AVG Free Trial is that in some ways it's very helpful. But on the other hand it needs more improvement in order to help the users' computers work faster and stay free from any malicious works and programmes.

AVG Anti-Virus Free needs more improvement
So far I see that AVG Anti-Virus Free is quite strong to eradicate the menacing virus that haunted my computer. However I see that there are some areas where I find that it is not so efficient compared with with AVG 7.0 . Now I'm using AVG 8.0 Trial Version for one month. I wonder if it can give more help in order to counteract all kinds of threats that always come and interfere the computer working system.
Posted by Tomaka Taulialia, 28 Sep 2008
Disappointed
I'm afraid that I have to agree with others who have commented on the bad performance compared to AVG 7.5.
I was very happy with 7.5, it did what it was supposed to in an efficient manner. This version is a resource hog, and since they are going to force me to upgrade by stopping the updates for 7.5, I have now switched to Avira free.
It's a real shame that they had to break a nice product in the name of "progress", but AVG aren't the only company offering good virus protection for free so I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

AVG Slow
All IT Professionals will agree that the best free anti virus program is AVG how ever from my point of view as a IT professional this software is slow and takes very long for a full-system scan espessically if you have a large hardive with 1000's of files on there.
Posted by Bridget Kelly O'Sheehan, 08 Oct 2008
Disappointed
Like many others I was perfectly happy with AVG Free for years up to and including version 7.5. Version 8.0 slows my machine and I also have to update manually every day. I'm now looking for a place where I can download version 7.5 again as I believe it will still be supported for a while longer. If I can't find it, I'll be trying Avast or Avira for the first time.

A good choice for those on a restricted budget
AVG Free 8 has been the saving grace for my PC. Not only has it stopped threats before they even enter while I've been browsing and eliminated some annoying adware & trojans, it has saved me the punctured condom that is Norton. The guys at AVG do an amazing job to provide such a high quality program for free. Yes it might be a little slow, yes sometimes the update server is really busy, but for a free product it is top of the range.
I run a 10mb broadband connection so download speeds are not really a problem for me. I just think some of you giving the not so positive comments should think on the basis that it is a free program, when something is free you can't expect TOP service, but AVG really does go that extra mile.
10 out of 10 for this product.

Use Avast
Avast is so much better than AVG, it updates frequently and quickly with no disruption, I've been using it for the last two years with no problems at all. And like AVG it is also free.
Posted by John Martin, 09 Apr 2009
Seriously How Is This Better Then Avast and Antivir?
avg has lower detection rate and higher false positives than the other 2. its got the slowest scanner, and worst updater of the 3 as well. all three are free so that sure isnt an advantage. the only advantage it has over the other 2 is it doesnt have to be registered but unlike the other 2 it does have optional adware.
Posted by MattLee, 31 Dec 2008
AVG 8 - Come on you guys - this is free software!
As a user of AVG for years now, I have also noticed the time penalty in V8. However, since the software is completely free I simply schedule my activity around it. The world will catch up with AVG as hardware and infrastructure develops. I think its healthy for AVG to be advised of the issue but we should approach the subject as if were on the same side! (I am not affiliated with AVG excepting my appreciation of their work and user of their softeware).

Untrustworthy
A friend of mine recently had all kinds of problems with her PC, so she ran a different anti-virus on it and it picked up 13 infections that AVG didn't. Don't be a tight-ass and spend some money on something more reliable. You get what you pay for!

Wont update and wont uninstall
Jeez I made a mistake using a free program I installed AVG 8 build176 from this very site and it missed a few virus's at first but but after the first update it dealt with them.
BUT NOW not only does it not update, but it wont uninstall either, AVG do not help as they only advise people who bought their program, the freeware version is not registered with them so they dont help people. Fair enough but surely if you are stuck with an AV program that neither works nor uninstalls what are you supposed to do?
Posted by Steve Day, 31 Jan 2009
free stuff
you dont always get what you pay for.we live in a market place where some companies have made huge profits on the basis of joe public believing the saying "the more you pay the better the product"
just bear in mind the words more money than sence,so buyer beware is the best saying to go along with,as for avg i have run it very well with no problems for many years also rising is also free too and just as good if not better.

AVG 8
Come on for a free one its great, I have had years of protection free. The ver 8 works fine on a modern spec computer, virtually undetectable in the back ground. Much less than previous versions of say, Norton. But We want more bells and whistles so more resources have to be available. The secret is to update your computer not blame the makers of such a fine program

Won't scan and having probs with other programs now!
I've used AVG free ever since I stared using the internet, but their seems to be major probs with this version, I started having probs with some software after loading and did not connect the two till reading the posts here, it also has probs loading the updates unlike 8.0 and now having checked it has not done a single scan since upgrading from ver 8.0. So at the moment it is providing NO PROTECTION AT ALL to my pc apart from emails (and who knows if it's really doing that!)
I've got to look elsewhere to protect my pc.

I wish I had read this thread before I downloaded 8.5. It completely clogged up my machine and I was unable to use it for 3 days. AVG 8.5
Having paid for for two years protection for two machines with AVG, I downloaded the 8,5 upgrade as demanded by them. It did not give any option, as 7.5 was being switched off on 30th April. It partially downloaded 8.5 and gave me a new Licence number, but that was it! 7.5 was switchedI off by them, so I emailed to tell them that I was now without cover, so required help at once. I received a srandard reply two days later to tell me that they would deal with my problem in due course! That's the end of AVG so far as I am concerned!

AVG 8.5
I have a brand new dell studio. I have been running Norton Internet Security for over 6 years. Have now installed AVG 8.5. It is the best Antivirus I have ever used. I think most of your guys probs arise from having older pc`s coz it does slow your system down a bit but not noticable on a powerful pc.

No GUI
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate.
I have AVG Anti-Virus Installed and according to Microsoft's Security, AVG is installed and I am protected. But I have no User Interface on AVG. The trouble with this is that I can't "Update", so I don't think I'm kept up to date with my protection.
When I click on the icon on the desktop, a message comes up saying; "failed because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. View Application event log".
Also, there is no icon in the Task tray.
I have tried looking at the even viewer but it doesn't give me any usable information.
I have un-installed and re-installed including re-booting between.
But the GUI just doesn't return.
I have been to computeractive reader's,

AVG 8.5 free upgrade
Wow what a mess. Have been using AVG 7 without problem but had to upgrade as there was to be no support for version 7.
After installing 8.5 everything is in Dutch and despite many attempts to revert back to English it still remains in a language that I don't understand.
How do you scan if you don't understand the instructions

AVG 8.5
As many alike my computers and AVG 7 were as 1???Not anymore?3.5 hours to scan and the amount of false possotives is rediculous? One thing i did find was useful was the extra removal tool for Win32/Parite trojan but when i scanned using a trojan remover i.e being Trojan Remover 6.7.5 it actcualy said that the parite was in the AVG file???So it came as no surprise that they had the Parite remover tool(kinda convienient)Am trying again with N.I.S-09 and also Avast and antivira??But a cute little release that has hit the freeware is COMODO internet security(complete suite)This i have found will pick up everything, basicaly it misses nothing??Ilike this a lot and will run until further notice???By the way GLAD TO SEE NO-ONE MENTIONING dare i say McAffee??ROFL tears streaming down my eye's??But Still have to respect AVG for series 7 as we all used it and loved it but 8.5 IF PURCHASED ask em nicely they might give you a refund??

AVG
No matter how good a system is if the AVG company resolutely refuses to reply to customers problems then it is a failure.
I've been a 3 machine user for 2 years and haven't had a single reply from AVG. Now they want me to renew but nowhere do they say what I'm renewing.
Surely it's not too much to ask for them to set out their offer in plain english. Alas I have, reluctantly to try and find a supplier that cares and provides an easy suplier/customer interface.

AVG v 8 updates
Can someone confirm what the addtional logo to the Microsoft Windows logo shown when updating. This mysterious logo consists of a rectangle divided into four quarters coloured red.blue, green and yellow but there is nothing to show what it represents.
The second point concerns whether updates that appeared during a period when I cannot get to the internet is automatically included in the next update.
Otherwise I think AVG v.8 works very well.

Should have tried AVG before!
Download worked without problems and got rid of a virus that Norton could not! I also saved nearly £60 for NOT renewing Norton for another year - should have tired AVG before.

It works for me.
Recently bought an Acer 5536 laptop and installed AVG 8.5. No problems to report. Have done a couple of all-night scans and pc is squeaky clean. Quite happy with the level of protection for a free program.

AVG install
This version seems to believe it will have issue with zone alarm fire wall.asks you to uninstall it. Why?other versions run fine with it.
Posted by L.Fletcher, 16 Oct 2009
Incompatible with Zonealarm?
After downloading AVG Free9, the installation stage was halted with a dialogue box instructing me to UNinstall my Zonealarm firewall. I am very reluctant to do this, my AVG 8.5 worked perfectly with this firewall so why is this new version demanding that I must do so?

BSOD!
Within minutes of installing AVG 9 I had the BSOD, took me an hour to sort my desktop out! 8.5 Runs great, as has all the other versions, I'll hang on until I absolutely need to upgrade, even then i may use another free anti-virus?

Not working
File corrupt, don't bother.
V3.co.uk comment: the download is not corrupt. The file downloads directly from the AVG server. However, make sure it is fully download before trying to install or it will appear corrupt.

If I download rar files with my download manager they are corrupt when I try to extract the files, I went back to 8.5. It took hours to find the reason.

AVG Free 9.0698a1730
Installed on four machines (3 WXPpro and 1 Vista Home) - and all four ran VERY slow and their hard drives were continually accessed?
Went back to 8.5 and sanity was returned!
Now I am being told by AVG that I have to upgrade(?!) by 1st December - but there appears to be no change in the version available (and I see lots of people are moaning so it is not just me?). The worst thing is that I can't get any response from AVG having reported this problem four times via the ffedback - and the forum is not accessable by using the passwords etc. I have from them!
NB. I know this is a 'freebie' but it should still work!

AVG9 Download manager OH NO
Just tried the Free AVG9 download. I read the more section of the Computeractive article on the new AVG. Some one had commented that going straight to free.avg.com was easier. Actually it is just as misleading. But that was the least of the problem. AVG point you to a partner site for the down load then all you get is a AVG down load manager (800KBish). This has the following problems: 1 it wants to do a live down load and update, that means that my preferred method of going to AVG getting the down load then disconnecting physically from the internet, then unloading the previous version before loading the latest version can not be done. 2. after I had loaded it i tried an uninstall it stopped my IE8 from working after all the restarts required. So that means my other means of updating Free AVG ie by down loading on one PC and moving the down load to another PC difficult if I go direct to the AVG partner. I am about to try the 72MB Computeractive version. I really hope this works because I like the previous versions of AVG and have loaded it on my sons, daughters and brothers laptops using the one down load technique ( saves on down load capacity).

AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0.698
If you have a quite slow connection, don't bother with the AVG Security Toolbar stuff unless you absolutely have to.
It slows Firefox down to a crawl-about the speed of an old version of IE-if you can't remember that, it means you are often left looking at a blank page for up to a minute while firefox tries to connect & download the desired page.

AVG 9
I have downloaded this upgrade, but on the user interface it says that the license expires on the 4.12.09 what does this mean. I am a home user, but cannot understand this.
Each day it updates via the update manager, but says that the system requires a restart, the last one didn't!
Please advise.

AVG 7.5 good AVG 9 Bad, Avast 4.8 better
1st off, Chris Wiles, you should run this program before you put your name associated with it,(and if you did, I'd like to chat about your true thoughts and what you are running on your personal rig) because over the last several years I've read your reviews and analized/tested many of the products that you've reviewed and they are usually right on target, but not this time buddy because AVG's done gone South for the Winter.
Ok look, I run/maintain 8 computers at work and 2 at home and help out a dozen friends/gamers and colleagues with their computers and in the past I have seen them run into problems with the preinstalled trial Antivirus software that comes with these system, Norton, McAfee, Eset, CA, etc. etc.. While these bundled trial AV programs do a good job for the most part, they are resource hogs and cost plently to buy. Trust me I know from my experience with my Time Warner Road Runner Turbo account at home that comes with CA's AV. (Computer ASSociate), talk about a resource hog....
So I've gotten many calls/requests to install something better and cheaper/free. In the past I have found AVG to be fairly comprehensive at keeping these systems clean and running fast. Recently though 6 of these people have called me to complain that after they have updated to AVG's newest version 9.0.707, that their computers have slowed down and take forever to do scans, (Ray said his 2 month old i7 Quad core 4GB RAM system took 4 hours to do a scan and it found nothing). So I have uninstalled AVG 9 and switched 4 of these to Avast 4.8 and everyone's systems are faster and the scans are quicker. (Ray called me this morning after Avast ran its first full scan and it found 3 trojan downloaders and the Win32/Netsky virus, which Avast Quarantined and removed, and that AVG never found, now his system is blazin fast again). Tonight I have 5 more people who want me to come over and switch them too.
Although AVG might have been a good free alternative at one time, it is no longer a viable source of protection. Kinda like the way Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program use to be the best antispyware and now I know an 8 year old that can get junk past its antispyware engine.
I've also noticed that while once easy to contact, their support is unreachable of late at AVG.
Final words: Don't risk your sysem getting infected by using AVG anymore. If you can't afford or don't fell that you should have to pay for a Full Blown Antivirus Program and if you would like a rather safe/light-on-your-system, FREE, Antivirus Program with customer support, I'd give Avast Antivirus a try, also Avira Antivirus is pretty good. Both of these provide good protection and don't slow your system down much.
NOTE: while running a full scan, ALL AV's eat resources and will slow you down somewhat, so don't expect to be gaming or downloading/filesharing/ video editing, etc, while running a full scan and not slow down a little bit.
HINT: always schedule your scans at a time that you will be away from your computer, like during dinner, or when your favorite TV show will be on, like me, I run mine during Monday Night Football. )

CAN'T DOWNLOAD AVG BECAUSE THE INTERNET KEEPS DISCONNECTING
Since yesterday, I have been trying to download AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0, but without any luck at all because the internet keeps disconnecting. My computer has been on all night.

Anyone else having this problem?
Anyone have any ideas why?
Anyone have any ideas on how to download AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0 SUCCESSFULLY?

Upgrading AVG 9. slow down your computer
I'm using AVG 8.5 it was real good without any problems, until the prompt pop-out asking me to Upgrade to AVG 9.
I'm a online gamers, After i upgrade to AVG 9 everytime i start run my online gaming, my computer will slow down until the game become 'not responding', which this never happen before.
I checked the task manager to see what program that use so much CPU usage until my computer runs down. It's show avgrsx.exe use 99% of CPU usage, and that is a AVG's Resident Shield. I have to turn it off to play my online games.
Another problem is, Any fullscreen programs will always been minimized by AVG 9 every 30mins.
I also checked AVG official forum, lots of peoples report a same problems as me.

Load of rubbish
I bought AVG 8.5 and everything seemed fine on my pc, no real problems, but then I upgraded to AVG 9.0 and my pc basically stopped working.
It seemed to take forever to start up. Every programme I tried to use wouldn't work properly and the whole pc was just so slow. The words "not responding" appeared so many times I got fed up with it.
It would take over 4 hours to do a scan.
In the end I uninstalled it, which was a challenge in itself.
Overall I wouldn't advise anyone to use this.

Avast Anti Virus
Hello is anyone there! I have just received the following email 'Avast has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process msimn.exe)to the POP server74.125.77.208 (gmail.com).
This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please sizable SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the scanner can scan your mail. The mail scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself.'
I do wish all the Whizz Kids out there would write in a language we the thick users could understand! Less Jargon, more 'STEPS' 1. 2. 3. and so on.

AVG problems
Been using avg for a few years. Everything OK, I presume, up to the day I downloaded the new AVG 9. (free versions) I use the Inland revenue CD ROM to run a payroll, which had been fine for two years, then I went to do the payroll and it refused to work, saying contact website problem with the CD. I contacted the Inland Revenue, they asked me if I had installed any new programmes, I suggested that i had downloaded the new AVG and they presume this is affecting the fire wall already installed on the PC. I am not a computer expert in any way, I would just like to know what i have to do to put things right, as April is now approaching fast and I need to ship the figures off to the Inland revenue and at present I cannot access the figure to send.

AVG Free 9
What are you people on? By the sound of it half of you should be no where near a computer, you boast about the systems you are running yet gripe about paying for antivirus protection and when you get it for free moan about that too. Simple solution...if you don't like AVG 9 use something else and stop moaning. I run 4 systems all with AVG 9 and operate around the "Dirty" side of the net nothing slowing me down.

AVG Free
By the very nature of things the majority of posted comments are likely to be from people who have had problems. I'd like to redress the balance a bit.
I have used AVG Free for over 5 years, currently on Version 9.0.851, and have always been pleased with it. Over time it has become increasingly sophisticated and comprehensive. One of the latest improvements being that it now also scans for spyware.
Additionally I also use AVG Free with the free Zone Alarm firewall, and in my case I have experienced no problems. From my experience I would recommend both.

AVG is good, vut watch out for Software-H-Q.
Whislt trying to reload AVG which for many years has performed very well, I was ensnared by this devious practice, operated by Software.-Pros.comQPS, who by a devious means, unknown to me got $69 out of my credit account. My Bank have stopped the payment, but their merchant bank is trying to get their hands on my money, in return for what? absolutely nothing. All should be alert to their slick practice of somehow masquerading as the genuine site AVG,and obtain your details for something that AVG would provide free of charge. AVG is an excellent package, but beware the activities of Software H-Q.

You keep telling the world about this AVG free but no where can I see how to download it. Everytime I click on Download, it comes up with the fact that it is free Trial for 30 days and after that I have to pay. Am I doing something wrong?????? I am sending this via someone else's email address since mine does not have any risk cover at the moment

They've ruined it !!
The new version 2011 is a disaster on Vista and XP machines. On XP machines it appears to use up all of the system's resources and slows the PC down to a crawl. On Vista you can't successfully upgrade previous versions without first downloading and running the AVG removal tool from the AVG website. AVG has always been my favoured free antivirus tool. I am now looking at alternatives.

HELP
Hi, I am a novice user. My current Micro Trend finishes in 4 days. I have read quite a bit about Norton and others too. Getting convinced on AVG Internet Security 2011. I run Windows XP. Use my computer lot for online shopping / banking and academic study as well as social networking and music. My precise question: With AVG Internet Security 2011 do I still need to buy AVG Anti Virus 2011 to have complete security? Will I still need AVG PC TUNEUP 2011? Thanks in advance. Tony

Unlucky few
I have used the FREE version of AVG for several years now. Currently, I have versions running on two desktops, one laptop and one netbook. These are variously running under XP and Win7.
PROBLEM:
When I put the latest vesion of AVG on my laptop (XP) everything slowed right down (more than 20 seconds to open a folder in explorer!)
SOLUTION:
I got rid of some programs that I no longer used (including that awful MSOffice 2010 stuff - which I replaced with the excellent and FREE Libre Office suite) and cleaned up my hard drive, which gave me back my missing speed.
I am, once again, one of the happy majority who benfit from using this product - what more can you ask of something that is truely FREE to download use and update?
With the range of O/Ss in use on, and the amount of customisation of, computer set-ups available to users it would be strange indeed if there were no 'unlucky few' suffering problems with updates of any software.
If you are suffering problems and you feel it is the software you are using, the simple answer is - get on the net, examine what is available and try something else, there are plenty of alternatives.

My daughter and i tried to download avg free anti virus, before it would download it asked for £9 charge for 2years service. (NOT FREE) I decided that £9 pounds for 2 years was okay so proceeded with the download and payment.
I got my visa bill a week later and was shocked to find i had been charged £38.85. Needless to say i want my money back and have cancelled avg and deleted their program. Please be aware when dealing with this company, they are not very honest people to do business with. It will be interesting to see if they print this comment in full.

free avg 2001 has a trojan
I downloaded the FREE avg 2011 until my new server was available with its own virus protection. Well be so carefull, try uninstalling it ( over and over and over again) it will NOT uninstal because it has embedded files in my computer that cannot be gotten rid of. So I phone AVG for help.
Yes sir we can get rid of it, it will only cost you £70 for us to do this and we can also instal AVG for only £30. WHAT A SCAM I think they should be looked into as this was THEIR FREE AVG that caused the problem. Be very carefull, I am not asking microsoft to help me with this problem.

AVG 2011
Glad I read these comments. Downloaded IE8 vice IE7, computer slowed by 20% estimated. I can live with that, but windows d.e.p. (not necessary for XP!) detects "malicious add on", so can't get latest adobe reader update or flash player updates either. Downloaded AVG 2011, and now takes twice as long to do anything, including boot up. Anyone got a billing address for AVG/Microsoft for the wasted time?

Good but not the best
Using this upgraded version of AVG AV Free.
The software is far from perfect in detections despite the white-list technology. It detects most of the Gateway Games as virus and have to manually Ignore it from the next scan. It still detects a Windows system file mfc45.dll as a virus and I think it is atrocious.
Otherwise, everything seems to be fine till a threat actually infects the drive.

You Get What You Pay For
I have been using AVG Virus Protection since I bought my first PC in 1999. I used the 'free' version for the first few years and the paid version ever since. I use only the AVG Virus Protection and a separate Anti-Spyware protection and a separate Firewall. While most of the 'PC Security' companies do a great job of protection against different kinds of 'malware' (Viruses, Spyware etc.), they aren't as good as protecting against ALL of the different types. I have found better results with individual protection programs instead of the so-called 'security suites'. They all claim to be the 'jack of all trades' but they seem to be the 'masters of one',

nothing is free!
When when when will people realise that nothing but nothing is free!? The days of so-called 'free' AV software are numbered. I have absolutely no knowledge of what processes are running in the background of these products, but you can bet your life that there is more going on behind the visible GUI than meets the eye! If I were the chief exec of AVG/Avira/Avast or any of the others (which I'm not) I'd be asking my IT developers to convert all those millions of users into paying customers! Enjoy - but think first; these are bona-fide companies that have wages to pay :-)

AVG 2012 nightmares
I have been paying for AVG for oveer 10 years I upgraded to 2012 and it promptly overwrote many of my settings (XP) including Internet home page. My 3G remote connection will only display websites while AVG is suspended.
I didn't agree to this. There is no way to contact AVG except through some SE Asia call centre who have no phone No. or means of identifying themselves as genuine but they offer to take over your PC to fix a problem they don't appear to understand. I have paid my last fee for AVG

Shame
Firstly, make sure that you link to the genuine AVG site, not the first URL you see with AVG in the search results. I've also found CNET trustworthy.
Next, no anti-virus software supplier guarantees that you will always be virus-free. Some are better than others.
AVG doesn't work with ZoneAlarm, and I'm a ZoneAlarm fan.
Whilst running AVG, I ran an ESET scan and found 3 Trojans (or variants of Trojans.) I'm now a paid up subscriber of ESET. I guess you only get what you pay for.

Reverting to AVG Free
THere are no options on the GUI. However, when you choose to uninstall the full version, you are asked whether to uninstall completely or to revert to the free version.

AVG 2013 lockups
After updating the previous 2012 version (free version) I now have to start my laptop 3 times just to get it working, ever since changing I have had slow or no boot-up. This is a shame as 2012 was working beautifully. Why can't companies leave things alone, if it aint broke don't fix it. Now trying to uninstall but that is proving problematical, Sorry AVG but a big minus in my book, now off to find another AV supplier.

AVG 2013
After downloading AVG 2013 and losing my internet connection i then proceeded to remove AVG 2013 from my PC. All went well and my internet connection is back. It actually removed my local area connection from my network connections. I have now installed Microsoft Security Essentials in its place. I have been running it on my laptop with Windows 7 you dont even know that its there.

AVG interference
I only asked AVG for protection, I DID NOT give them permission to interfere with my computer operation & install unwanted other AVG services. I have had nothing but trouble since I renewed my 2012 account. Their support service is useless too, Offshore & inexperienced. I shall NOT renew next time.

terrible update
added lots of additional services, interferes with basic functionalities such as using windows explorer , slows down opening word and excel... terrible edition. had to switch away from AVG in the past because of interference with Zone Alarm, looks like will have to do it again...

AVG 2013 DISASTER
AVG 2013 has damaged 2 of our 3 PCs. It is a catastrophe - are they no longer validating their own software?

Got rid of it
After upgrading from AVG 2012 the two PC's at home started to freeze and hang on boots. It took me a while to discover the culprit was AVG. Got rid of it.

avg 2013 latest update causes windows 8 major problems - :)
having recently automatically updated to this latest version .2897, on a perfectly working laptop, i went to no sound, no playback devices found, media errors and interestingly the activation product id also somehow dissapeared and i was asked to activate (already activated) the operating system - system restores back to prior install appear to work, but as soon as reboot the problem arises again - checked all other applications and the culprit AVG 2013 - i've decided to clean up windows 8 to factory settings and not use AVG again! disappointed as i subscribed for 4 years with no real issues. AVG support advised me to repair the version - this didn't work either!

Worst virus there is
AVG 2013 free offers search bar. With Win 7 and Chrome there is apparently no way to get rid of damn thing. It keeps popping up every time after the start. All suggestions found on net have failed. This is the lousiest thing that happened to me after years. Last time I touched AVG product.

AVG 2013
This version is the worst....it has crippled my laptop to the point that my IT guy can not get the laptop up and running....my home PC's crawl and crash daily....this AVG issue is garbage....and I have been a paying customer for years....trying to get it off my computers but struggling at best.

Nothing But Problems!
If you haven't upgraded your AVG to 2013 then DON"T. I have been using AVG for years without a hitch but now there are frequent lock ups and it stops in the middle of scans all the time. Even scanning one item it won't complete. Fix the problem and don't fill people full of BS and blame them or say the problem doesn't exist. I'm less than a month away from switching for good.
