If you’ve used Microsoft Outlook for a while, you’ll know that it can be a pain when downloading and processing your email. It takes an age, your system slows, your drive is accessed frequently and it is best just to wait for it to complete downloading your mail. If you become impatient, it’s easy to stop it half way or attempt to close Outlook. Either way, Outlook won’t have erased the email from your server, so the next time you attempt to download your email, you’ll have to download the previous email, too, leading to duplicate email messages.
Up until recently, duplicate email removal applications were always commercial tools. It makes you wonder why a duplicate remover wasn’t added to Outlook, or at least made easier to access? After a year of downloading email, the pst file can soon become enlarged to the point you need to start manually erasing email or run the supplied tool that enables you to search for email over a particular size.
Outlook Duplicate Items Remover is a tool that enables you to scan through your inbox and search for duplicates. It can take some time, but it does work. The duplicate emails are moved to a separate folder which you can then erase. The tool embeds itself as a menu item within Outlook, making it easily accessible, whenever you need to remove duplicates.

deleting outlook dupes
I've tried this program - in my opinion, I don't like it. My computer froze during the de-duplicating process, and then it sporadically moved them into a folder that I couldn't find. And did I forget to mention it took forever...literally, I left my computer after a while so it could run and it still wasn't done when I came back. Talk about a burp in my business day. Although it's a menu add-in and free, I found it not worth the hassle.
So I went searching for another product and found one that I like. I love it, actually. For those of you who are reading this, try Anti-Dupe. I saw their ad at the bottom of this article, interestingly enough. It may not be free, but for $15 I can be out of a headache...which is chump change for what it's done for my Outlook. There's a trial available in case you want to see for yourself. www.anti-dupe.com
(for you Google-phobics out there)
Hope this helps, happy de-duping!
