Ubuntu is a complete, easy-to-use Linux-based operating system developed by a large community.
Ubuntu is developed with the idea that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
These freedoms make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.
The latest release includes a whole host of additional software, but the core desktop installation fits on a single DVD.
Ubuntu covers every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to web server software and programming tools.
Do you agree?
Ubuntu 6.06
I have been playing with a number of Linux 'distros' (versions from varied suppliers) ver a few months now. Why? To move away from the vulnerable and weighty XP. One of the first was Ubuntu 5.1 which installed simply (after partitoning) and simply picked up imediately the wireless liknk then simply worked! 6.06 is even better than 5.1. Graphically and performance great! Downside? Well, simply having to be selective as to the software (90% + free) available to use in Ubuntu Linux which I used in XP. My Palm synchs fine, Mozilla is great as is Thunderbird for web and mail. Scribus is getting there (vs PagePlus) and Open Office rocks - really powerful software!!!! It just remains for me now to get Skype up and running 100% and bye bye XP! Ubuntu also have a routine for updates which is invisible when on line and keeps the software fully harmonised and up de-bugged. Choice is another aspect of Linux. The various 'distros' have their own flavour and feel and with at least two desktops to choose from (KDE and Gnome being the most prolific) the world is your prawn. Keep going Ubuntu! Your philosphy is great and the forums give answers to most questions which, for the individual user is free. Linux does require a certain willingeness to learn some basic programming stuff in the terminal if you want to tweak or change things to suit your specifics (if needed!!) and this can also be fun too!
Free, VERY stable, relatively virus free (certainly against Windows) and upgradable as you go... what more can I say??

Compare it with others
You can compare Ubuntu with other free operating systems at http://polishlinux.org/choose/comparison/?distro1=Ubuntu&distro2=Mandriva
BTW, Edgy Eft really rocks and it should be a good fit for most of the Windows converts.

Rockin'
I've been using Ubuntu for years now and it has always performed well and been easy to use and upgrade... Vista has competition, oh yeah!
