Many operating systems enable you to take a basic grab of your desktop. Within Windows, you can press the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard and that should take an instant grab of your entire screen.
However, this doesn't always work and isn't always the best way to grab your desktop. Sometimes, you might find that some applications (widgets, perhaps) don't show when you use this function.
If you want to grab a particular section of your desktop, such as a particular application, grabbing the entire screen is overkill and requires a lot of system resources if you've got a large monitor.
Screenshot Captor is a free tool that enables you to take a grab of your entire screen, a specific window or simply a section of the screen. It's a superb little tool that competes with the commercial screen-grabbing tools on the market.
You can choose to include the cursor within your grab, the amount of compression you want to apply to your image, add special effects to the grab and, once you're happy with the results, export to a number of image formats.
Note that this application requires a little configuration before use, for instance turning off the automatic image compression before grabbing your screen.
Do you agree?
Its nagware
A simple review shows that a detailed registration process is required and it needs repeating every 6 months. meanwhile a number of 'contribute' e-mails arrive constantly.
Plus its actually resource heavy.
A better choice is MWSnap -which really is FREEWARE and does not require installation -running from a USB stick allows real screen capture and is wonderful for error screens, teaching grabs etc.

Too many problems
Create a system restore point before downloading this program as you'll want to eradicate it within half an hour. I experienced numerous Access Violation Errors; the PrtScr button often failed to capture at all; using Open with... on the shortcut menu created pop-up warnings that I already had the program open; and you will have to read the help files to get anywhere as the menus are cluttered and unintuitive.

Best Screen Capture
This is really the best and easiest screen capture program out there. I've designated F1 to capture the current screen, F2 to capture the whole screen and F3 to capture a certain area of the screen.

A bit OTT, bloated with nagware
I agree with comments & the suggestion posted by: chris, 04 Mar 2009.
In addition, MWSnap is only 600-700Kb - no bloatware, like this is.
The only -ve about MWSnap is that it doesn't have a setting to 'round the edges' of the screenshots it takes.

Ashampoo Snap
I use this prog for my screen grabs -VERY versatile and possibly the program I use more than anything else except Windows. I'm a lecturer and take hundreds of screen dumps for every course I deliver. Yes it costs a few £s but it really is excellent, loads of editing features and as far as I can see has no issues.

No thank you
I would not go with this as it's already been stated by others. I use PicPick, free, many options, does not install, no resources, easy to use, editor, everything you need. Screenshot Captor is bloated and I have to say, no thanks I will stay with what works.

have the best already
I have used Gadwin Print Screen for several years. It's the best, simple to use and works every time.

Why would I use this?
I haven't used Screenshot Captor, but from the description provided it doesn't seem to do anything more than the free Snipping Tool provided by Microsoft with Windows 7. So why should I bother with Screenshot Captor?
