D-Link DSM-320 media player

Stream audio and video around your home

Clive Akass

Microsoft's vaunted XP Media Center Edition is not the only way to turn a PC into a home-entertainment hub. The D-Link DSM-320 media player allows you to stream video or audio to your TV or hi-fi from any 500MHz-plus PC using Windows 98SE or above. You can also use it to view photos on your TV.

The system box is styled like a largish (43.55 x 28.75 x 3.81cm) hi-fi unit, with an array of connectors on the back: audio (coax and optical), composite video, Scart and an RJ-45 network jack. There is also an aerial for 11b/g Wi-Fi, although the RJ-45 link is faster and more robust.

Sadly, the software has the feel of a first version: it works, but the ergonomics are not right. Navigation using a TV-style remote control is sluggish and clumsy, and set-up is not for anyone likely to be fazed by an IP address.
