The latest version of Neon’s LANsurveyor changes little in the application’s
performance or appearance, but does improve its software-asset reporting
capabilities.
A new repository offers improved diagrams and discovery methods via support
for Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) and Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP).
There is also support for Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0. This
searches for security vulnerabilities and misconfigurations on Windows-based
PCs, and reports whether the latest security updates have been installed in both
the operating system and Microsoft applications running on it.
Version 9.5 provides extended integration with Microsoft Visio and support
for Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), which enables
offline nodes to be included in reports.
Installation is easy; the interface is simple to use, but can get quite busy if
multiple reports and monitoring processes are run simultaneously.
Nodes are grouped into a number of categories, including IP addresses, node
names, IP routers, SNMP hubs/switches, SIP clients and Layer 2 devices; and
reports are selected to run on individual devices or groups of devices. More
advanced functions such as software and hardware inventories and application
analysis are supported when Neon Responder clients, available at extra cost, are
installed on computers running Windows or Mac OS.
