Mustek DV4000

New to the world of digital video? Then this camera might be just right for you.

Rory Reid

The Mustek DV4000 is a low-cost digital video camera aimed at those who want to take their first steps into digital photography. Like its predecessor, the DV3000, this is a versatile device that captures still photos and short movie clips. It is also capable of playing MP3 music files, recording voice clips, and acting as a memory card reader.

Despite its extensive list of features, the DV4000 stumbles in many areas.

Movie clips are blurred and the camera finds it difficult to adjust to different light conditions, and movies look like they were taken with a mobile phone rather than a dedicated digital camera.

It performs better with still photos but the final results are of a fairly low standard. The MP3 playback function is a useful idea, but the awful earphones compound the already questionable playback quality.

As a memory card reader, it does fairly well, but it is only compatible with the MultiMediaCard format. On the whole, the DV4000 is a great idea but its poor performance makes it hard to recommend.
