Cambridge SoundWorks MegaWorks THX 2.1 250D

'Cinema quality' speakers with a hefty price tag.

Scott Colvey

The name of the latest speaker set from Cambridge Soundworks is in itself something of a condensed review, including as it does references to several of the package's key features.

The '2.1' part of the title describes the primary parts - two 'satellite' speakers and one subwoofer - while the THX label instantly alerts audio buffs to the fact that this equipment has been granted Star Wars director George Lucas's 'cinema quality' seal of approval (which, assuming you have a similarly-certified soundcard, is a good thing).

Finally, the 'D' suffix indicates that these MegaWorks speakers accept both analogue and digital inputs.

So, do they sound any good? Well the audio output is remarkably good, with or without a THX-compliant sound card.

The satellite speakers have good range while each thud of the subwoofer made our test bench resonate, and the cable-connected remote control is useful (though not as useful as a cordless equivalent).

Would we pay £180 for a stereo speaker set? Not on your nelly.
