Microsoft's 32GB Surface tablet offers just 16GB free space

Microsoft surface tablet without keyboardBuyers of the 32GB version of Microsoft's fresh-off-shelf Surface tablet running Windows RT may be in for a surprise, and not just that the tasty in-house tablet delivers the first truly business class user experience on the market. Indeed, we at V3 were impressed enough to award it a coveted five star rating in our in-depth review.

But this ARM-based tablet delivers something that users may find less to their liking: far less storage space than they may have expected. In fact, the 32GB model will leave them with just 16GB to play with.

Of course, every tablet and smartphone comes with less free space than advertised, but that's an awful lot of space being dedicated to the operating system. Those that buy the 64GB will also get much less free space – 46GB to be precise.

Many business users may overlook such stinginess with the free space, especially given they have access to full-blown versions of Microsoft's Office apps – and they can always bung in a SD card, given that the Surface RT supports additional memory, unlike Apple's iPad.

The proliferation of cloud-hosted storage services also addresses the issue to some degree.

Even so, Microsoft can expect some unsuspecting customers to be less than happy to be getting about half the memory space they were expecting.
