Perstel Adapt DR-101

The first portable digital radio we've seen.

Digital audio broadcasting (Dab) is slowly taking off. More than 250 stations have now appeared but, until you've got a digital radio receiver, there's no way of tuning in.

The Perstel Adapt DR-101 is the first portable Dab radio we've seen. By portable, we mean smaller than an audio cassette tape.

Switch the Perstel on and it will automatically locate a series of stations within a group or 'multiplex'. For instance, one multiplex will contain all the digital BBC stations, while another holds all the local digital radio stations.

The Perstel is built with a large screen displaying the station name and any programme information or news headlines that station may be broadcasting.

Switching between multiplexes or stations is easy using the three navigational buttons. You can even extend a telescopic aerial and flick to FM radio.

If a full-strength digital signal is received, the sound quality is superb. However, step inside a building or try to use it in a built-up area and you'll experience garbled reception. Extras include a set of headphones and a smart carry case.
