Alfresco has beaten its rivals to the chase by incorporating the new content management interoperability standard (CMIS) into its Community 3.2 edition product.
Why is this important? Well, apart from the being a good bit of publicity for the open source content management vendor, it could help developers participate in the evolution of the emerging standard, which some think will lead to the biggest shake-up of the ECM industry ever seen.
According to Paul Hampton, director of product marketing at Alfresco, the new standard will be as significant to the industry as SQL was to the relational database industry, allowing the development of write-once run-anywhere content and social applications.
"CMIS combined with the cloud will change the content management industry," he said. "It's very exciting - there'll be a while new set of content rich applications, taking content from any source and mashing it up. In two or three years time we'll wonder how we ever lived without this."
The Oasis-driven CMIS 1.0 standard is currently in public review stage, so the hope is that organisations and developers will test it out in Alfresco 3.2 and contribute to the two month long process before it ends on 22 December.
