We have to admit we were just as excited as the guys when the Wii came out. Oh yes we hid behind our cynical exterior, with the usual “guys are so sad queuing up for a console” but deep down we were as excited as we would be if Gucci announced a 75 percent off sale.
We were therefore beside ourselves when we managed to jump the editorial queue here and nab the Wii for the weekend – something we wouldn’t even dream of doing in a Gucci queue; well we value our lives you know!
Considering how much we were shaking with excitement we were surprised at how easy the console was to set up. You plug in the supplied A/V cables into the TV and stick
the pre-stuck wireless sensor - which is what connects the controllers, to anywhere central; we for example, just put it in front of the television.
We had heard the horror stories about Wii controllers flying out of hands and into TV screens, or in our cases ‘accidentally’ into other halves. Therefore we were relieved to see that the controllers - which look more like remotes than console controls, came with straps to tie to our wrists.
The console comes with two supplied games, Wii Sports and Wii Play. Feeling ambitious and rather, uh, sporty we decided to start with the Wii Sport which comes with a range of sports choices. This includes baseball, boxing, bowling, golf and tennis. Thinking we might magically turn into Anna Kounikova we decided to start with the latter and must say how mightily impressed we were.
Although the graphics are not what you would find on the PS2 or Xbox 360, we liked them; they are simple, yet effective and reminded us a bit of the graphics of the consoles of the 90s.
Playing the tennis game also made us feel like children again, the way that the controllers work means you actually have to do the same manoeuvres you might on a tennis court and if we are honest it really tested our fitness levels; we were huffing and puffing after three games.
The other games, especially bowling, were also as fun and interactive as this. We also recommend the boxing as a good way to get your aggression out – virtually, of course.
Wii play, although not as good as Wii sports, was fun. Within this program we could play shooting, fishing and also search for our Mii’s – characters such as Ali G, Brad P (!) and Mr Migiaki (who looked surprisingly like Mr Miyagi from the Karate Kid).
These characters were also prevalent in the Wii sport games and caused the mob which invaded our humble abode on Saturday night - Wii news travels fast - endless amounts of fun. It was just a shame we only had two controls.
We cannot fault this console - for £180 it gave us hours of fun and fitness. The games and graphics were undeniably basic but this added to the charm. However, one word of warning, if you do decide to buy one of these, keep it quiet, buy dark curtains and learn how to move around in the dark or you may end up playing arcade host to more than a small county.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

As well as complete Tropicana debacle was left off why? Speaking of Tropicana, does the brand new Aol logo remind any one on the rejected Troipcana logo? Personally, I am not a fan from the Aol rebrand. While the execution and implementation are outstanding, the real wordmark is boring, uninspired, and just form of blah. That getting stated, I agree with a lot of the other rankings. I'm nonetheless in really like with the metropolis of Melbourne is new id.

Posted by: online games 09 Dec 2010

Please keep up the good work

Posted by: Koolatron 08 Dec 2010

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

I'm in awe that they can allow Margarito back after just a year suspension for what he did. It's not the first time he has been accused of this, but it's the 1st time he's been caught. Luis Resto went to prison and got banned for life for what he did. Margarito basically did the same thing, but he got caught before he could get in the ring and almost/kill some one. This scumbag does this and then gets a title shot against the best P4P boxer on the planet, such a disgrace.

Xbox 360 is technically better by miles. If you're the sort of player who wants a challenge and is into tougher and more hardcore games get the Xbox 360. If you're really into fun games which aren't very challenging but are fun to play and are quite silly then get the Wii. If you like a bit of both then get the Xbox 360 cause that also has some sillier fun sort of games as well. Xbox 360 has a MUCH better online system than the Wii. The graphics I shouldn't even compare. NO COMMENT on that. The games on the Xbox 360 are better if I'm talking from a critics point and from a core gamer point.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
