Medium_2 If you've used a tool such as Copernic Desktop Search or the OS X based Spotlight search function, you'll know that your search results are displayed almost instantaneously. Vista has a much improved search routine, but it's still not at the level of various competitors, who do the job more effectively. These tools work by indexing your system at a low level, whilst you are working on your PC. Once indexed, any new information you add to your PC is added to the search database. For instance, if you wanted to search for the term 'conference', any files, documents or email with this word will be displayed as a result.

Microsoft Windows Search 4 Preview is a technology preview of the new search function from Microsoft. This is based on the search function from Vista, with a few new features. For instance, with Windows Search 4 Preview, you'll be able to search across computers connected to your network.
