There was a time, a few years ago, where you absolutely needed to use Adobe Acrobat to output PDF documents. You could produce web-quality documents using free PDF tools such as Ghostscript, but we now have various PDF generators such as doPDF which will enable you to produce a commercial-quality document from any Windows applications. These days, Adobe place emphasis on editing, managing and collaborating with PDF documents, rather than the iniital production.

Adobe Acrobat 9 is now available, along with the trial version of the Professional edition. Compared to basic editors, such as Jaws PDF Editor 4, it's a huge download at over 325MB. It's also rather expensive, too, at £499 (inc VAT) for a single-user license. If you need to collaborate with other users within your workplace, it's going to be pricy for a multi-seat corporate license.
