It's easily done, especially when more than one person uses the same computer. Drop an important work file to your desktop, someone else decides to clean up the desktop and wipes the file from Trash. Most files can be recovered easily as, unless you've written a lot of new data to your drive, the chances are the remnants of the original data is still on your drive.
