Use your computer for some time and you'll find that it takes longer to boot, applications launch more slowly and it just feels far more sluggish. This performance downgrade is partly due to your drive(s) becoming fragmented, so it takes far longer to find, locate and open files from your drive. Bad fragmentation can lead to a shorter drive lifespan, which isn't good for your long-term system. However, you can get around this using disk defragmentation software, although the free apps generally are limited so you have to defragment one drive partition at a time.20 May 2009
